The Barracks combines a sports bar, a full dinner restaurant and a function venue inside Whanganui's former RSA premises. The business reopened under its current identity in 2018 and keeps a military theme through spaces such as the Remington Restaurant, Duke Bar and Ammo Room. It remains a public venue rather than a private club, and the food service is substantial: casual lunches and sharing dishes are available in the bar, while the restaurant moves into steaks, seafood, slow-cooked meats and desserts for dinner.

Duke Bar handles the relaxed side of the menu. Loaded wedges, fries and toasted sandwiches suit a quick lunch, while beef-and-bacon, chicken-and-brie and beer-battered tarakihi burgers offer three noticeably different fillings. Open steak or chicken sandwiches provide a larger plate, and creamy chicken fettuccine or fresh tarakihi move beyond handheld food. In the evening, sticky pork ribs and sliders join the selection, with sharing platters bringing skewers, fish bites, samosas, spring rolls and squid rings together for groups watching sport.

Remington Restaurant is built around more traditional dinner choices. Its grill covers rump, scotch fillet, T-bone and bacon-wrapped eye fillet, each matched with sauce and a choice of vegetables or salad and fries. Chicken appears in pasta, salad, sliders and a breast served with garlic prawns, while slow-cooked lamb shank and twice-cooked pork belly lean toward richer comfort food. Tarakihi can be battered, crumbed or pan-fried, and salmon, vegetarian pasta and an omelette broaden the main-course options.

The venue's entertainment and dining functions work together rather than occupying separate worlds. Big screens, pool, snooker, darts, table tennis and live music give Duke Bar its social character, while the Ammo Room can host larger celebrations, meetings and receptions with buffet or platter service. Dessert in Remington includes creme brulee, cheesecake, chocolate brownie and sundaes, so a restaurant meal can finish conventionally even when the rest of the building is lively. That combination makes The Barracks suited to both a seated dinner and a group occasion.
