Kahakai Poké Bowl serves Hawaiian-style bowls and tacos from a permanent food truck at Liardet Street Projects in central New Plymouth. The setting is more sociable than a takeaway window alone: the shared food-court site has relaxed seating, a children's play area and a pool table, so customers can settle in after collecting their food. Founder Annie Foley developed the idea after craving the colourful poke she ate during visits to Montréal. Her version keeps the fresh, coastal spirit while bringing Japanese-inspired dressings and garnishes into every made-to-order bowl.
Building a bowl starts with rice, spinach or a combination of both, followed by a clearly defined protein and sauce. Chicken karaage comes with soy-honey dressing, fresh salmon with ginger-wasabi ponzu and pulled beef with lime. Prawns carry a lively Volcanaise sauce, ceviche uses coconut and lime, and torched fish aburi is finished with miso-lime. Pulled pork receives a pineapple-led jus, while tofu karaage and ginger teriyaki create a fully plant-based path. Japanese mayo, crispy shallots, coriander and sesame tie the components together.
The same fillings reappear as poke tacos, changing the balance from layered bowl to a more compact handheld meal. A diner can choose one or two tacos, making it easy to compare salmon with chicken, ceviche with prawns, or pork with tofu. Snacks extend that mix-and-match style through karaage bites, miso soup, garlic edamame, lotus-root chips and small sushi bites with ponzu. A mini poke bowl works for a smaller appetite, while extra avocado, seaweed, vegetables or protein can turn a standard bowl into something more substantial.
Every bowl and taco is gluten-free and dairy-free, and the tofu option makes the menu genuinely useful for plant-based diners. Those dietary features are built into the core offer rather than handled as afterthoughts, which simplifies ordering for a mixed group. Lunch and evening hours give the truck two distinct rhythms: a quick, fresh midday meal and a casual dinner eaten in the courtyard. Kahakai's appeal lies in that combination of speed and detail, where sauces, crisp garnishes and colourful vegetables keep a straightforward bowl from feeling routine.
