Teppanyaki Takao has been part of central Kaiapoi's dining scene since 2005 and has occupied its upstairs Hilton Street premises since 2011. The restaurant is centred on the shared teppanyaki table, so dinner unfolds as both a meal and a live cooking experience. Reservations are strongly encouraged because seats gather closely around the grill, making the format particularly well suited to families, friends and groups who want to eat together rather than at separate tables.
At the teppan, the chef prepares seafood, beef, chicken, fish and seasonal vegetables directly in front of diners. That tableside preparation gives each course an immediate quality: ingredients move from the hot plate to the table while guests watch the timing, turning and finishing. The menu is arranged around special courses, combination dinners and standard teppanyaki dinners, allowing a table to choose between a broader sequence and a more focused selection.
The kitchen combines fresh local produce with Japanese ingredients and makes its dipping sauce, creamy mayonnaise and dressing in house. Set menus are supported by side dishes and daily specials, with some choices changing to reflect seasonal availability. Separate vegetarian and children's sections make the experience workable for mixed groups, while kitchen sides and desserts provide options beyond the food cooked on the shared grill.
A licensed drinks list rounds out the evening with New Zealand and Japanese beer, wine, spirits, sake and plum wine, including Sapporo on tap. Guests can use the balcony for a drink before or after dinner, adding a quieter counterpoint to the energy around the cooking tables. Three teppan tables also allow the restaurant to host larger private functions, with menus and timing arranged to suit the occasion.
