Tussock Hill Vineyard and Cellar Door Restaurant turns a Port Hills vineyard into a relaxed lunch destination, looking over the vines and Christchurch from Huntsbury Avenue. The family-owned property follows organic and regenerative practices, and the restaurant connects that farming outlook to the plate through seasonal Canterbury produce. Head chef Adam Harrison structures the food for sharing and designs it to meet the estate's handcrafted wines, weaving the cellar door, vineyard and lunch into a single experience.
The opening section moves easily from a small bite to a composed first course. Seasonal oysters come with lemon verbena and green-peppercorn jelly, while warm olives carry citrus and fennel. Housemade nettle sourdough uses organic grain and arrives with butter and garden pickles. Local cheeses and freshly sliced charcuterie can extend that grazing style, before dishes such as cured wild fish with preserved lemon or aged beetroot with honey and deer-milk espuma bring more intricate contrasts to the table.
Larger plates are built with sharing in mind. Middlehurst lamb ribeye or shoulder combines slow-roasted onion, smoked apple, shallot marmalade, nettle emulsion and lamb-tongue ragù, while roasted local catch is paired with heritage carrots, little-neck clams and saffron bisque. Buckwheat panisse with lion's-mane mushroom gives the menu a substantial plant-based direction. Hasselback potato enriched with lamb fat and horopito, or roasted leek with artichoke tapenade and green apple, complete the spread.
Dessert continues the seasonal approach through combinations such as Basque cheesecake with dandelion root and autumn raspberries, or buttermilk panna cotta with rhubarb, white chocolate, magnolia sorbet and spiced oats. Diners who prefer to leave the selection to the kitchen can choose the curated lunch, a sequence of dishes shaped by produce from the surrounding land. Wine flights provide another route through the vineyard's range, pairing the restaurant's food with bottles made on the same hillside.
