Moon Under Water is a neighbourhood craft-beer pub set among the residential streets of Somerfield. Its scale is deliberately intimate: only part of the room is reserved in advance so walk-ins still have a chance of finding a place, and seated dining groups are kept relatively small. That approach suits a local built around conversation and repeat visits rather than the anonymity of a large central-city bar.
The food starts with familiar pub appetites but gives them an individual twist. Southern-fried chicken comes with hot honey or the house's spicy ranch-style sauce, twice-cooked pork belly is glazed with hoisin, and lemon-pepper calamari is paired with candied-jalapeño aioli. The Somerfield Spice Bag is especially tied to the venue: an Irish chippy combination of fries, fried chicken, onions and capsicum, shaken together and served with house-made curry sauce.
Larger choices move between tacos, burgers and pizza. Slow-cooked Angus brisket fills crisp corn tortillas with red onion, mozzarella, pico de gallo and salsa roja, while the fish tacos combine battered catch with slaw and pickles. Burger options cover beef, fried chicken, battered fish and a tempura-mushroom version, and the pizzas range from hot-honey pepperoni to mushrooms with truffle oil or smoked Akaroa salmon with dill cream cheese and capers. Vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free pathways are marked throughout the menu.
Drinks are as central as the kitchen, with 18 rotating craft-beer taps, a broad bottle selection and more than 70 small-batch gins. Gin paddles match three spirits with premium tonic or soda and garnish, while low- and no-alcohol choices mean the drinks list is not limited to beer or spirits. Together with the compact room and flexible walk-in policy, that range makes Moon Under Water equally workable for dinner, a shared plate with a new beer or a long catch-up at the local.
