Mackenzies Restaurant & Bar is the dedicated dining room inside Rendezvous Heritage Hotel Queenstown, pairing an alpine-lodge atmosphere with views toward Lake Whakatipu and the surrounding mountains. The restaurant serves breakfast and an evening à la carte menu every day, while its bar runs from late morning. Fires add warmth in winter and the balcony comes into its own in summer, giving the same Fernhill venue a different character across seasons without losing its focus on relaxed hotel dining.
The current starter list uses local references and carefully chosen contrasts. Otago venison carpaccio is matched with Caesar dressing and charred sourdough, while seared halloumi meets Southland mānuka hot honey, thyme and heirloom tomato. Braised pork belly comes with corn cream and burnt apple purée, and a lodge lamb puff adds shallot and garlic yoghurt. Crispy artichoke with butter-bean salad provides a vegetable-led option, allowing a table to open with several distinct combinations rather than variations on one idea.
Main courses continue the regional thread while covering fish, poultry, pork, beef, lamb and pasta. Paprika market fish is paired with peas, chorizo, grains and parsley sauce; slow-braised chicken sits over celeriac mash with caper and white-wine velouté. Beef cheek and ribeye offer two very different treatments of beef, while Southland lamb rump combines shiitake, cauliflower purée and XO sauce. Creamy courgette, spinach and ricotta linguine supplies a meat-free alternative, supported by vegetable sides designed for sharing.
Drinks and desserts make the restaurant more than a convenient hotel dining room. The wine list draws from Central Otago and other New Zealand regions alongside international bottles, and signature cocktails use ingredients such as local coffee, chilli, lychee, lemongrass and fruit purées. For dessert, Otago plum and apple crumble keeps the regional emphasis, while Baileys chocolate mousse and tiramisu provide richer finishes. Coffee, tea and dessert wines allow dinner to end slowly beside the fire or after an evening overlooking the lake.
