Return marks a literal homecoming for chef Matt Lambert and his wife Barbara after a decade in New York. There they created The Musket Room, which received a Michelin star within four months and retained it for seven years. Their Ponsonby restaurant turns that international experience towards seasonal New Zealand produce and a menu of individual plates rather than compulsory sharing. The room mirrors the sense of return through local material and warmth: a live-edge kauri bar anchors one side, a travertine fireplace another, with a bright street-facing space and a more intimate area gathered around the bar.
The snack section lets diners begin lightly or assemble an energetic first round. Milk bread comes with brie butter, while frybread carries creamed Tora pāua. Marinated fried bone marrow is matched with kina, and a knowingly named ‘fish and chips’ sits alongside mushrooms with sourdough. Duck croquettes use olive and orange marmalade to cut through their richness; crayfish tart brings bonito and citrus into a more delicate frame. The combinations are recognisably New Zealand in ingredient, yet the technique and structure reflect a chef accustomed to moving between cultures and fine detail.
Entrées and mains continue that balance. Market crudo is paired with radish and mascarpone, Ora King salmon with citrus, bitter leaves and beet, and Cambridge duck with kumquat and bread sauce. Wild venison is seasoned with gin botanicals, while smoked pork brings loin and belly together with kale and cauliflower. A Southern Stations wagyu ‘steak and cheese’ shows the kitchen’s willingness to recast familiar language, and market fish with cabbage and prawn keeps the seafood choices grounded in what is available. Vegetable sides such as smoked cheddar with barley and butternut are composed with similar care.
Return offers both à la carte freedom and two tasting paths called Short Story and Long Story. The latter extends through scampi, whitebait and coastal lamb before desserts and petits fours, while optional wine pairings create a fully paced experience. À la carte desserts include an apple study with lemongrass, miso and yoghurt, carrot cake with cheesecake, espresso and chai, and pavlova with passionfruit. Cocktails and a broad wine selection support a shorter visit, and limited bar seats are reserved for walk-ins most evenings. Friday lunch adds another way to experience the cooking in the daylight-facing room.
