KOL remains a fire-led restaurant and cocktail bar at its established Ponsonby Road address, now under the ownership of Sapan and Ruchi Parikh. Their 2025 handover retained key kitchen and bar leaders, preserving continuity while allowing the menu to develop. Indian flavours still provide the restaurant's vocabulary, but charcoal, smoke and contemporary presentation determine how they reach the table. The warm rooms and bar make it possible to begin with a drink, order across several shared plates and let dinner unfold at an easy pace.
Recent dishes show how confidently the kitchen uses fire and contrast. BBQ broccoli is roasted for deep char, glazed with char siu and balanced by kale and hibiscus-spiced yoghurt. Prawn toast layers sesame, garlic and chilli over a crisp base, while small chicken sliders combine richness with crunchy masala cabbage; paneer can take the place of chicken. These are compact plates, but each is built to move between smoke, spice, tang and texture rather than functioning as a simple prelude to a main.
The larger savoury selection keeps recognisable Indian preparations in conversation with the house style. CharKOL butter chicken and chicken tikka masala sit beside lamb hariyali, goat curry and paneer lababdar. Tandoori dal makhani gives slow-cooked lentils a smoky emphasis, while paneer tikka supplies a grilled vegetarian option. Curry, rice and layered fenugreek paratha can also be assembled as a complete combination, making the menu useful whether a table wants to share widely or concentrate on one substantial plate.
Weekend lunch introduces brioche sandwiches filled with tandoori chicken, lamb seekh or halloumi, accompanied by masala fries. In the evening, cocktails are designed to echo the food's bright, smoky and spiced flavours, and set-menu date nights offer a more directed experience. A private room can accommodate a small group, while walk-ins can use the bar for drinks and a shorter menu. That flexibility keeps KOL equally suited to a quick Ponsonby lunch and a drawn-out occasion.
