The Hop House occupies a restored 1917 building in Tauranga's pedestrian-friendly Wharf Street precinct, where timber floors and historic ceilings give the family-owned tavern a sense of place. The business began in Mount Maunganui in 2015 before moving to this central address. A front street terrace, sheltered rear courtyard and open fire let the atmosphere shift comfortably between sunny afternoon drinks and a relaxed evening indoors.
Food is treated as an important part of the visit rather than a token accompaniment to beer. The kitchen works with fresh ingredients and house-made sauces, and the burger selection covers beef, chicken and a falafel-and-halloumi option, each built as a complete meal with fries. That range gives mixed groups an easy shared reference point while still leaving space for different preferences and appetites.
Craft beer remains the clearest thread through the room. Twelve taps rotate through beer and cider, encouraging repeat visitors to find something new rather than relying on a permanently fixed list. Cans and bottles widen the choice further, while wine, gin, whisky, rum and non-alcoholic drinks mean the venue works for a table whose interests extend well beyond hops.
Service is deliberately informal, with guests ordering at the bar and settling into whichever part of the building suits the occasion. Live music, Thursday quiz nights and guided beer or wine tastings add energy to the weekly rhythm, while the Sunday roast offers a more traditional reason to linger. A separate function room for groups of up to 50 also makes the venue practical for private celebrations and work gatherings.
