Bardeaux is tucked into Eureka Arcade off Queenstown's central Mall, creating a quieter counterpoint to the town's louder late-night venues. The room is defined by dark, intimate surroundings and a large open fire, with comfortable seating, attentive service and music pitched for conversation. It works naturally as an après-ski retreat, a date-night bar or a place to settle in with friends, while indoor and outdoor areas can also be arranged for birthdays, engagements and cocktail-style gatherings.

The drinks list sets the direction, with enough breadth to reward a little guidance from the bar team. Local Pinot Noir is a particular thread through the wine list, supported by vintage bottles and Champagne. Cocktails add another route through the menu, while an unusually deep whisky collection makes the venue suitable for comparing different distilleries and styles rather than simply ordering a standard pour. The fireplace and lounge-like pace encourage lingering, especially when a wine or whisky is matched with one of the cheese-led plates.

The antipasto platter is the most expansive food choice, combining cured meats with chutneys, pickled vegetables, fresh fruit and a selection of Whitestone New Zealand cheeses. A dedicated cheese board focuses the tasting on Totara Cheddar, Livingstone Gold, Windsor Blue and Aged Airedale, accompanied by crackers, fruit and chutney. For something smaller, the Taste of the Two pairs Kāpiti Brie and Windsor Blue with grapes, quince paste and crackers, giving two distinct cheeses enough supporting sweetness and texture to stand alone beside a glass of wine.

Bardeaux also offers a compact set of complete meals for guests who need more than grazing food. Chicken pad Thai provides a noodle-based option, while tomato and basil tortellini and bolognese with garlic ravioli cover two pasta styles. Roasted cashews and peanuts remain available for lighter snacking. That concise food range keeps the venue's focus firmly on drinks without leaving the table dependent on nuts alone, and it makes the platters especially useful for sharing during a longer evening or a small private celebration.

Single Malt Scotch Whisky – Islay

These are generally the weightiest, most pungent and most heavily peated and are, therefore, easily identified whiskies. These malts take their dominant characteristics from the peat which is used to dry the barley, and their proximity to the sea. These elements give them what is often described as sea weedy and medicinal aromas and a distinct burnt peaty flavour.

Tend to be sweeter and have more body and character than Lowland relations. They can have more distinctive and subtle characters, with a rich mellowness and fullness of flavour and occasionally, a delicate fragrance. They have fruit flavours and sometimes a delicate peatiness.

Single Malt Scotch Whisky – Speyside

Speyside’s malts are Scotland’s sweetest. Although they do not have as much body as some Highland malts, their flavours are richer and more complex, showing fruity, leafy and honeyed notes and subtle delicacy of aroma which, once recognised, should be easy to identify.
