Grand Century carries a family restaurant story into one of Te Aro's larger Chinese dining rooms. The Tai family first opened New Dynasty on lower Tory Street in the mid-1990s, then moved to the present 84 Tory Street site and launched Grand Century in 2003. Lunch and dinner still centre on a broad spectrum of Chinese flavours rather than a single regional style.

Yum cha is the midday anchor, with more than 70 choices crossing steamed, baked and fried traditions. The selection moves from shrimp and pork dumplings, beef balls and stuffed tofu to barbecue-pork buns, turnip cake and prawn-and-chive pancakes. Egg-yolk buns, coconut buns, sesame balls and custard tarts make it easy to finish the shared sequence on a sweeter note.

The dinner menu has the scale to suit a larger table. Peking duck is served with pancakes and crisp accompaniments, while white-cut chicken takes a gentler route with garlic and spring onion. Chongqing chilli chicken, black-pepper fillet steak, XO squid, prawns with hot-pepper sauce and fish in chilli oil bring progressively bolder savoury and spicy choices to the centre of the meal.

Service spans lunch and dinner every day, and the restaurant supports reservations, online ordering and larger gatherings. Groups of more than 12 can arrange their visit directly, while venue-hire enquiries make the roomy Tory Street setting useful for celebrations and events. That flexibility matches the food: a couple can select a few dumplings, while a crowd can build a many-dish banquet.
