kingi occupies the ground floor of the heritage Masonic House in Britomart, moving from early coffee through all-day dining and into dinner. Its point of view is grounded in New Zealand landscapes rather than a single imported cuisine: seafood, game, vegetables and wine are chosen to express the ocean and land they come from. Partnerships with independent fishers, farmers, hunters and growers give the menu a clear sourcing framework while the cooking stays approachable enough for a quick lunch or a longer evening meal.
The opening dishes show how that idea translates at the table. Wood-fired flatbread can be paired with charred carrot dip or whipped roe, and kūmara sourdough is offered with burnt-coconut butter. Te Matuku oysters and cured gamefish introduce the sea directly, while red deer tartare on potato galette brings smoke and richness from the land. Crayfish tacos with kiwifruit, avocado and habanero and Mills Bay mussels with nduja use bright acidity and spice without obscuring the main ingredient.
Larger plates continue the geographic conversation. Market fish is treated simply with brown butter, capers and citrus; venison is matched with quince, butternut and toasted-yeast beurre blanc. Pāua bolognese fills leek-and-potato agnolotti, bringing shellfish into a pasta form that still feels rooted in Aotearoa. Lamb pithivier with celeriac béchamel supplies a more classically structured meat course, while snapper with almond sauce, smoked-eel gribiche and grapes layers several marine flavours on one plate. The combinations shift seasonally, allowing origin and freshness to guide the form of each dish.
Diners can hand over the sequence to the kitchen through the four-course Taste of kingi, or use the weekday express lunch for a shorter visit. Seasonal sides such as sunchokes with truffle honey and labneh or leaves with macadamia, orange and parmesan keep vegetables active rather than ornamental. A carefully chosen glass of wine is part of the restaurant's land-and-sea proposition. For private occasions, a brick-lined room carries the same seasonal New Zealand produce into a dedicated dining or conference menu with a few additions of its own.
