Korean Bob is the family project of Jackie Lee and Joseph Hong, created to share Korean food and culture with Invercargill. Jackie learned to cook from her mother, who ran a restaurant in South Korea, before developing her own professional kitchen experience in New Zealand. The couple had already spent years feeding friends, students and large gatherings at home, and that instinct for hospitality now shapes a restaurant they describe as a cultural library: a place where a meal can also introduce traditions and stories.
The opening section of the menu is well suited to exploring several familiar Korean textures. Tteokbokki brings chewy rice cakes in sauce, while fried gunmandu offers a crisp dumpling contrast. Japchae uses glass noodles, and the pancake choices include both kimchi and vegetable versions. These dishes can work as individual starts or as a shared spread, giving a table a way to move between softness, crunch and the deeper fermented flavour of kimchi before choosing a larger rice or meat plate.
Bibimbap and bulgogi form the centre of the main meal. Bibimbap layers vegetables and egg with rice, with both beef and vegetable versions represented, while bulgogi can be ordered with beef or chicken. Spicy pork and spicy chicken bring more heat without changing the generous, direct style of the plate. The recipes connect closely to the food Jackie learned in her family, so well-known Korean dishes are presented as part of a personal cooking history rather than as an anonymous international checklist.
The Dee Street restaurant supports dine-in, pickup and delivery, with weekend lunches complementing dinner service through most of the week. That flexibility makes it useful for a quick collection as well as a seated meal, but the dining room carries the fullest expression of the owners' aim to build connection around food. Kimbap, kimchi and Korean pancakes sit alongside the rice, noodle and bulgogi dishes, creating a compact menu that can introduce newcomers while still giving familiar combinations to diners who already know the cuisine.
