Smugglers Pub & Cafe has leaned fully into its pirate theme since opening near Tāhunanui Beach in 2004. Reclaimed beams and riveted brackets from old bridges and wharves shape the room, while cannons, fishing nets, a clinker boat, a piano-playing skeleton and assorted smugglers turn the interior into a theatrical maritime hideaway. The detail makes it particularly memorable for families and groups, but it remains a working seven-day pub rather than a themed attraction alone. A rear courtyard offers another place to settle with food and a drink.
The menu begins with food designed for a shared table. Garlic bread, sticky pork belly bites and crisp cauliflower can lead into halloumi, spiced chicken or Cajun fish tacos. Burgers are equally substantial: the house smash burger stacks two beef patties with bacon and cheese, while the chicken version uses Mexican spices, avocado and chilli-lime mayonnaise. A ribeye steak sandwich adds caramelised vegetables and cheese sauce. These dishes match the room's exuberance, favouring strong flavours and generous construction over anything delicate or restrained.
Traditional pub appetites are well served among the larger plates. Crumbed or pan-roasted chicken sits beside beer-battered and pan-fried fish, while slow-cooked brisket comes with bourbon barbecue sauce. The tomahawk ribeye supplies the biggest steak option, and the pork ribs continue the bourbon theme with slaw and fries. Several choices can be adapted for gluten-free or dairy-free diners, and the salad bowls provide a fresher way to combine chicken, halloumi, fish or lamb with grains, vegetables and sharp accompaniments.
Food is available from daytime into the evening, supported by children's and gluten-free menus and a broad drinks list. Regional and international wines share space with New Zealand craft beer and familiar imported labels, fitting a venue intended for both dinner and a longer social visit. The feature table can seat as many as 24 people, giving birthdays and work gatherings a natural focal point beneath the nautical decor. Between that table, the courtyard and the all-day food, Smugglers can handle a casual family lunch as readily as a lively group night.
