Lone Star Nelson brings the New Zealand chain's generous, unpretentious style to Hardy Street. The branch opens every evening and combines a spacious dining room with outdoor seating, giving families, couples and groups room to settle in for a casual dinner. Its local function area can accommodate up to 120 guests and includes wheelchair access and a large screen, so the restaurant also handles celebrations and organised events. Warm service and substantial portions are central to the concept rather than formality or intricate presentation.
Pork ribs remain the defining order. The full-length Redneck cut receives a honey-and-spice blanch before being charred, then dressed in a citrusy hoisin glaze with sesame. Meaty St Louis fingers become the BB King serve, while the Cross Roads places both styles together. Different sizes let diners approach the ribs as a starter, a main or a shared order. Buffalo chips complete the signature presentation, reinforcing the hearty, hands-on character for which Lone Star has built its long-running reputation.
The rest of the menu provides plenty of alternatives to ribs. Dixie Chicken matches chicken breast with a sauce of garlic, cream and white wine, while the Cajun option adds sour cream and jalapeños. Jonny Stash encloses cheese, mushroom, spinach and sundried tomato inside a herb-crusted breast. Sirloin and ribeye steaks sit beside market fish, garlic-chilli prawns, burgers, nachos and slow-roasted pork belly. Vegetarian patties, roasted-vegetable quesadillas and burritos ensure a mixed table is not limited to the grill's meat-heavy centrepiece.
Dessert continues the recognisable Lone Star style through Kahlúa and Moro Bar cheesecake, warm white-chocolate pudding and pavlova with fruit and berry coulis. The menu identifies vegetarian, gluten-friendly and dairy-friendly possibilities, and staff can help with side swaps. For larger gatherings, the Nelson venue offers custom menus, platter choices and dedicated service, while its everyday format remains relaxed enough for a family dinner.
