Taste of Tandoor has served central Dunedin from Moray Place since 2012, pairing slow-cooked curries with food from a traditional clay oven. Indian spices and locally sourced produce underpin that approach, while table reservations, takeaway and delivery allow several ways to use the restaurant. The licensed dining room also offers BYO wine, so the venue can accommodate anything from a straightforward curry dinner to a longer meal assembled from starters, tandoor dishes and shared mains.
The tandoor gives the opening courses much of their character. Chicken tikka, creamy malai or reshmi kebab, lamb seekh kebab and tandoori prawns come together in the mixed sampler, while tandoori mushrooms provide a meat-free route into the clay oven. Samosa chaat and onion bhaji add contrasting combinations of crisp pastry, chickpeas, yoghurt, chutneys and fried batter. These choices make it possible to begin with a broad cross-section before committing to a main curry.
Across the main menu, familiar northern Indian favourites share space with regional and seafood preparations. Butter paneer, palak paneer, dal makhani, chole masala and malai kofta give vegetarians more than a token selection. Chicken and lamb appear as rogan josh, vindaloo, korma, saagwala and other spice-led styles, while Goan fish curry brings tamarind and cumin into the range. Prawns cooked in butter masala or Malabari sauce extend the choice beyond land-based dishes.
Biryani and breads help determine the shape of the meal rather than acting only as extras. Diners can select a vegetable, chicken, lamb or prawn biryani, while the bread list runs from plain naan and roti to stuffed and flavoured versions designed for scooping up sauce. Diners can choose a preferred heat level, and the menu marks dietary information across relevant dishes. Children's options and Indian desserts round out a restaurant offering that works for mixed groups with different appetites and tolerances for spice.
