The Bay Taupō has served as an Acacia Bay meeting place for more than three decades, combining a neighbourhood bar with a restaurant substantial enough for a planned dinner. Indoor and outdoor dining, takeaway, bookings and regular events make the venue useful in several ways, from an after-work drink to a family gathering. The kitchen prepares almost everything in house and prioritises sustainable, locally sourced suppliers and growers, giving the broad pub-and-brasserie format a more deliberate foundation than its relaxed setting might suggest.
The main restaurant menu begins with plates that can either open a meal or be combined for sharing. Arancini pair sun-dried tomato with mozzarella, seared scallops arrive with pumpkin and cauliflower, and lamb salad uses mint-chilli dressing, roasted kūmara and seeds. Larger dishes move through aged eye fillet, braised lamb shank, three-cheese pansotti and market fish with Mediterranean ragù. Duck-and-mushroom gnocchi adds a rich, earthy alternative, with chimichurri and crisp breadcrumbs providing contrast to the creamy sauce.
Wood fire gives The Bay another distinct strand. Margherita and pepperoni sit beside pizzas topped with artichoke and olives, smoked chicken with pancetta and brie, salmon with capers and cream cheese, or fennel sausage with potato and herbs. The pub menu keeps things more direct through fish and chips, sirloin steak, loaded fries, southern fried chicken and a grilled-chicken burger. A weekly curry provides a changing option, so casual bar food and more composed restaurant plates can comfortably share the same table.
Dessert continues the house-made emphasis through bread-and-butter pudding, chocolate fondant, seasonal crumble and vanilla ice cream. Affogato provides a coffee-led finish, while an ice-cream and sorbet platter lets diners sample several changing flavours. The venue's social character extends beyond the plate through live music and trivia, yet the breadth of the kitchen means food need not be secondary to the event. A visit can remain a quick pizza and drink or become a full sequence of entrée, main and dessert without changing venues.
