Parrotdog Bar sits inside the brewery's Lyall Bay home, one block back from the beach and close enough to the airport to work before or after a flight. The design borrows from old New Zealand pubs rather than a polished city taproom: cosy booths, a pool table and views into the working brewery gather around a traditional bar. It is casual, neighbourly and built for dropping in without a reservation, whether the plan is a quick pint or an afternoon that turns into dinner.
The brewery began with three friends all named Matt, who moved from home-brew experiments to a commercial launch in 2011. After outgrowing its central Wellington site, Parrotdog shifted production to Kingsford Smith Street in 2017 and added the pub-inspired bar. That story still shapes the experience because beer is not merely delivered here; the production space forms the backdrop. Familiar core labels such as Birdseye, Raptor, Bitterbitch, Sundog and Thunderbird share the taps with changing Lyall Bay and limited-release brews.
The food menu is compact but substantial enough to stand on its own. Snacks run from pita chips with hummus and dukkah to fried chicken or cauliflower bites, followed by beef, chicken, fish and house vegetable burgers. Salads are not token sides: one combines pear, blue cheese, spinach and walnuts, another uses grapefruit, pomegranate and feta, and a Mexican bowl brings brown rice, pickled vegetables, avocado and tostada together. Churros and a dedicated children's section make the offering useful for mixed groups.
Seventeen rotating taps make comparison part of the fun, while the neighbouring Nice. Takeaway cellar door adds ten takeaway taps and a walk-in chiller of cans and bottles. The food is designed for the bar rather than pretending to be formal dining: burgers, fried bites and fries suit a tasting flight, but salads and vegan choices keep the range from feeling one-note. With beer made on the other side of the glass and the beach nearby, Parrotdog Bar feels unmistakably anchored in Lyall Bay.
