Chow Tory Street is a level-one dining room in the middle of Te Aro's entertainment district, close enough to work naturally before or after a show. The restaurant is casual, fast-moving and designed around sharing rather than fixed individual courses. Reservations sit alongside pickup and delivery, and service runs into the evening throughout the week. Because Chow operates under a supervised licence, the venue is restricted to guests aged 18 and over, a practical detail for groups planning a visit.
Fresh rolls, dumplings and grilled plates provide the quickest introduction to the menu's broad Asian influences. Vietnamese rice-paper rolls keep things light with herbs and vermicelli, while prawn-and-lemongrass dumplings sit in a laksa-style sauce with galangal and noodles. Sichuan pork dumplings arrive in hot-and-sour chilli oil. From the grill come Thai fish cakes, salmon parcels with cashew pesto and pickled ginger, chicken satay, hoisin-glazed pork pancakes and beef rib marinated with kiwi fruit, coconut, pepper and star anise.
Curries give a table the richer centre it needs. Roast vegetables, kaffir lime and tofu form a jungle curry; five-spice chicken, smoky roast duck and braised lamb with kūmara and peanuts cover three distinct meat-based directions. Bao can be filled with jackfruit, karaage chicken or pork belly, and simple sides of black-bean greens, sweet-soy udon, roti and rice help connect the dishes. The menu clearly labels vegetarian and vegan dishes alongside gluten-free or dairy-free options, while the kitchen specifies free-range chicken, pork and eggs and line-caught fish.
Lunch compresses the experience into a broth, two smaller dishes and rice, with miso or beef pho setting up combinations of rolls, tofu salad, fish cakes, fried chicken or dumplings. Larger parties can choose shared set menus instead of assembling an order dish by dish. The bar has an equally deliberate identity: the Rosebud is the best-known house signature, joined by cocktails such as a martini, negroni, margarita or mojito and a wine list intended to sit comfortably beside the food's chilli, citrus, herbs and coconut.
