Dirty Little Secret rewards anyone who remembers to look up. The bar occupies Level 8 of the historic Hope Gibbons Building, reached from its discreet Taranaki Street entrance, and opens to broad views over Courtenay Place and central Wellington. A converted shipping container anchors the industrial interior, while the exposed rooftop and city lights give the space the laneway character that inspired it. It works equally well for an afternoon above the streets and a lively night out.
The kitchen treats sharing as the natural starting point. Salt and pepper calamari arrives with lemon aioli, ham and cheese croquettes gain contrast from pea purée and pickled fennel, and chicken wings can be ordered classic with sriracha mayonnaise or Buffalo-style with blue cheese dip. Garlic cob loaf, onion rings, jalapeño bites and nachos fill out the snackable side of the menu, giving a table plenty to graze on between drinks.
There is enough substance for dinner rather than just a round of bar food. Beer-battered fish and chips, chicken parmigiana and a beef-cheek pie with colcannon mash lean into hearty comfort, while mushroom linguine and a root vegetable salad offer meat-free alternatives. Burgers, a steak sandwich and a king prawn roll cover the handheld choices. Clear vegetarian, vegan, dairy and gluten option markers make the range easier to navigate for a mixed group.
Drinks remain central to the rooftop's identity, spanning seasonal cocktails, craft and premium beer, wine and spirits. Regular DJs and programmed events bring energy after dark, but the venue can also be divided into spaces for birthdays, work gatherings and private celebrations, with room for about 200 people in total. That flexibility is the secret to its staying power: it can be a lookout, a casual meal, a cocktail stop or a full-scale party without losing its unmistakably urban setting.
