Satay Palace is a casual Malaysian restaurant in the busy Te Aro stretch of Cuba Street. Diners can eat in, collect an order or arrange delivery, so the kitchen works for both a spontaneous city meal and dinner at home. The menu is particularly useful for sharing: skewers and snacks can lead into coconut rice, curries, noodle soups and wok-fried dishes, allowing a table to explore several parts of Malaysian cooking in one visit.

The satay that gives the restaurant its name arrives as grilled skewers marinated with Malaysian spices and accompanied by peanut sauce. Dumplings, fried wontons, vegetable spring rolls, chicken wings and shrimp-and-vegetable rolls offer crisp or savoury alternatives around the same opening course. Ordering a few of these smaller plates creates an easy bridge into the richer coconut, chilli and spice-paste flavours of the main menu.

Nasi lemak is one of the clearest house specialities. Fragrant coconut rice is served with chicken or beef rendang, egg, peanuts, anchovies, pickles and house-made sambal, setting creamy, salty, sharp and spicy elements together on one plate. The rendang itself is slowly stewed with a speciality spice paste and finished with toasted coconut. Other curries move through prawns, mussels and a seafood green curry built with coconut cream and a fresh herb paste.

Laksa and wok noodles provide a second route through the menu. Curry laksa combines fresh egg noodles with chicken, mussels, fishcake, fish balls, tofu and bean sprouts, while the seafood version adds prawns and squid. Chow kuay teow brings flat rice noodles together with dark and light soy, chilli and chives; Hokkien mee, nasi goreng and Pad Thai extend the choice. Vegetarian versions of fried noodles, rice and green curry make it possible to build an equally varied meat-free meal.
