Noble Rot Wine Bar has occupied its discreet Swan Lane setting since 2016, combining the calm of a dedicated wine bar with the substance of a dinner restaurant. Evening service runs from Tuesday to Saturday, while groups can arrange lunch separately. The scale and Te Aro location encourage a measured visit rather than a hurried drink. Wine is the organising principle, but the kitchen and reservation formats make it possible to build an entire evening here, moving from a first glass through several courses and into a final digestif.
The wine list is exceptionally deep: Noble Rot currently describes more than 500 bottles from New Zealand and the wider world, with over 80 available by the glass. Coravin technology allows selected wines to be poured without removing the cork, preserving the rest of the bottle and making more ambitious single-glass choices practical. That breadth supports curiosity. A diner can stay with one familiar region, compare local and international expressions, or ask the sommelier team to find a less obvious match for the food without committing to a full bottle.
Food can be approached in several ways. There is a full seasonal à la carte menu, five- and six-course Noble Selection experiences with optional wine matches, a shorter early-dining menu and bar snacks for a casual visit. The sweet end is equally considered: current choices explore mulled-wine-poached pear with spiced panna cotta, baked ricotta custard with orange, and a vegan combination of dark chocolate, miso and black sesame. Café gourmand and individual petits fours suit diners who want a smaller finish alongside coffee or one last pour.
Noble Rot also treats wine knowledge as part of hospitality. Appointed tastings for small groups compare six wines with charcuterie and cheese, with themes spanning New Zealand regions, international styles and fine wine. Private lunches, reserved sections and exclusive functions allow the team to shape food and drinks around a particular gathering. These formats make the bar useful at several levels, from an exploratory glass with snacks to a structured degustation or guided tasting, while preserving the close attention that a specialised wine room requires.
