Scopa Pizzeria occupies a front-row position on Wellington's Cuba Street, with large sliding doors that open the dining room to the street in warm weather. Brothers Leonardo and Lorenzo Bresolin run the restaurant, continuing a family connection to Italian hospitality while defining Scopa as Cuba Street's original pizzeria. The room carries an old-school character, but the kitchen does not treat classic Italian style as a boundary. Wood-fired pizzas remain the centre of the menu, made with light, crunchy bases, while the lively Te Aro setting makes the restaurant equally workable for lunch, dinner or a spontaneous stop during an evening on Cuba Street.
The pizza list begins with margherita and pepperoni, then adds combinations that make the menu unmistakably Scopa's. Carne layers ham, pepperoni, prosciutto and spicy nduja, while pancetta pizza balances cured pork and fresh mozzarella with semi-dried tomatoes and hot honey. A white base carries thyme cream, provolone, artichoke, rocket and pecorino. Eggplant, pesto and ricotta shape the Zana; Italian sausage, mushroom and scamorza define the Toscana; and potato with garlic cream, rosemary and black pepper offers a meat-free alternative. A vegan ortolana and a changing weekly special keep both dietary choice and seasonality in view.
There is enough beyond pizza to build a different kind of meal. Fried cauliflower with agrodolce and calamari with salsa-verde aioli work as opening plates, while Scopa fried chicken is finished with Calabrian hot honey. The oven produces spinach-and-ricotta cannelloni and melanzane al forno, and fried chicken alla vodka puts a playful spin on the tomato-and-cream sauce.
