Jimmy Jack’s Rib Shack & Craft Bar brings more than a decade of New Zealand barbecue experience to Bank Street. The Whangārei branch uses Southern Pride smokers for a low-and-slow menu built around ribs, wings, chicken and burgers, but it operates as a broad restaurant rather than a single-speciality counter. Seafood, steaks, salads and vegetarian choices widen the table. The result is well suited to diners who want the smoky satisfaction of barbecue while allowing companions to take a lighter or more conventional route through lunch or dinner.
Pork ribs remain the centre of gravity. A slab comes slow cooked under the house sauce, then changes character through its accompaniments: classic fries, kumara fries, wedges, vegetables or coleslaw. Other combinations pair ribs with Louisiana fried chicken, calamari and crab dip, or a seafood-accented macaroni and cheese. Additional sauces move from the original barbecue profile through sweet heat, buffalo spice and a much hotter reaper option. That flexibility lets diners keep the familiar rib base while choosing how rich, spicy or varied the finished plate becomes.
Sharing platters show the smokers at their most sociable, combining ribs with smoked wings, barbecue sausage, fried chicken, onion rings and an assortment of sides. The seafood section counters that meat-heavy spread with creamy chowder, battered fish and a trio that adds calamari. Burgers cover beef, Louisiana chicken, vegetables and a recognisably Kiwi combination of bacon, egg and beetroot. Char-grilled steaks and surf and turf complete the grill, giving a large group enough distinct main-course directions without leaving the restaurant's generous, informal style.
The craft-bar side highlights Good George alongside other New Zealand breweries, making beer a natural companion to smoke, spice and barbecue sauce. Parties can use several indoor and outdoor areas, and set menus help organise the order before a large group arrives.
