Smith & McKenzie Steak House interprets the classic New York steakhouse through a Hamilton lens. Industrial and contemporary details sit alongside references to historic butchery, and a large central fireplace gives the Chartwell dining room a natural focal point. The main restaurant is only one way to use the venue: a whisky-lounge-inspired McKenzie Room, all-weather Garden Bar and intimate Chef's Table support celebrations and private groups. That variety lets a serious steak dinner feel special without making the entire experience rigid or ceremonial.
The starters draw widely before the grill takes over. Prawn cocktail provides a familiar opening, while seared tuna is sharpened with soy, wasabi, pickled radish and sesame. Scallops and prawns arrive in chorizo cream, and the seafood chowder combines smoked kahawai, mussels and prawns. Mushroom arancini offers a vegetarian direction, buttermilk fried chicken adds Cajun warmth, and venison carpaccio uses truffle mayonnaise, pecorino and capers. It is a list built to reward sharing several contrasting plates rather than rushing straight to steak.
Steaks are organised by cut, from lean eye fillet and marbled Scotch fillet to aged T-bone, sirloin and skirt. Larger formats make the grill particularly suited to groups: a sharing board pairs Scotch fillet with fried chicken and steakhouse sides, while surf and turf adds garlic tiger prawns to eye or Scotch fillet. The centrepiece is an 800-gram grass-fed tomahawk. Sauces range from béarnaise and chimichurri to blue cheese and green peppercorn, with bone marrow, scallops and prawns available for further richness.
Diners who want something else still receive a substantial menu. Fish of the day, a sirloin steak sandwich and burgers sit beside vodka rigatoni, confit duck leg, slow-cooked pork ribs and braised lamb shoulder. Caesar salad can be extended with tuna, fried chicken or halloumi. Handcrafted cocktails, mocktails, wine and beer give the bar enough range for the different rooms and occasions. That breadth is useful in a steakhouse: the premium cuts remain central, but a mixed table does not have to order around them.
