The Conservatory has occupied Auckland’s North Wharf since 2011, with a living wall of plants giving the bar its name and visual centre. Water views run through the venue, from wharf-front tables to a wrap-around terrace that is covered and heated when the weather turns. Inside, leather seating and an open winter fire create a warmer counterpoint. The individually owned restaurant opens seven days and deliberately keeps the mood relaxed, allowing a waterfront lunch, casual drinks and a large celebration to share the same easy-going identity.
Food is made in house and cooked to order, with fresh, free-range or free-farmed ingredients guiding the selection. Small plates can begin with market oysters, seafood chowder, scallops with house-made black pudding, buttermilk fried chicken or burrata with tomatoes and basil pesto. Larger choices move into fresh fish, prawn and chorizo linguine, rib-eye and composed salads. The menu is broad, but its strongest thread is generous, recognisable food given enough detail to feel considered rather than fussy or detached from the social waterfront setting.
Burgers and oversized 18-inch pizzas make the menu especially effective for groups. The pizzas move from a simple tomato, mozzarella and basil combination to seafood, cured meats, Cajun chicken or a vegetable-led topping, while burgers cover beef, fish and spicy glazed chicken. Desserts include dark chocolate tart, tiramisu and warm apple strudel. Service does not end when the main kitchen rhythm eases: after 9pm, a smaller list of pizza, fries and sweets keeps late gatherings supplied with something more substantial than drinks alone.
The drinks list reflects The Conservatory’s free-trade status, allowing the team to choose beer, wine and spirits for quality instead of following one large brewery agreement. House cocktails sit beside classics, rotating taps and New Zealand producers, with thoughtful non-alcoholic options included. Different spaces change the feel of a visit: the sea-facing side suits groups, the exposed wharf tables capture summer energy, and the open-fire interior works for a quieter evening. Bookings can scale from two people to events of several hundred without losing the waterfront connection.
