Plated sliced meat with greens and berries at Christchurch Tramway Restaurant

Christchurch Tramway Restaurant turns dinner into a moving view of the central city. Guests board a restored tram at Cathedral Junction, settle at fixed tables and dine as the carriage completes several circuits of the inner-city route. The tram itself was built in Melbourne in 1927, refurbished for Christchurch and began its restaurant life in 2000, giving the evening a sense of living transport history without displacing the meal at its centre.

The principal evening departure unfolds as a paced, multi-course service with a welcome drink, starter, entrée, main, dessert and tea or coffee. Changing streetscapes pass outside while the waiting team manages service within the compact carriage, and a shorter early sitting operates on selected dates outside winter. Reservations are essential, which helps preserve the deliberate format and makes the experience better suited to planned dinners than a spontaneous drop-in meal.

The seasonal menu gives the journey a clear New Zealand accent. Autumn may begin with a canape of avocado mousse, peach and mango before a choice of cocoa-seared Canterbury lamb, grilled New Zealand octopus or a pomegranate-studded kisir salad. Main courses range from Tai Tapu venison with kumara and blackberry to Akaroa salmon, slow-cooked beef brisket and vegetable cannelloni. Matcha cheesecake, horopito-spiced pear and a plate of local cheeses provide three contrasting finishes.

New Zealand wine and local beer lead the drinks selection, with a matched-wine package available for diners who want each course paired. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and halal needs can be accommodated in various parts of the menu when arranged in advance. The combination of attentive table service, seasonal cooking and an ever-changing city backdrop makes the tram especially fitting for visitors, anniversaries and other occasions where the setting is part of the evening.
