Hummingbird has occupied its prominent Courtenay Place corner since 2000, offering a calmer counterpoint to the surrounding nightlife without becoming subdued. Deep green tiles, low lighting, velvet banquettes and bold hummingbird-and-flower details give the restaurant a rich, lounge-like character. A separate bar waits beyond a hidden door, allowing dinner to remain polished and conversational before the soundtrack and social energy build later in the evening.
The menu works equally well as a sequence of shared plates or a conventional individual meal. Market-fish crudo brings burnt orange and pickled chilli, while salt-fish croquettes arrive with preserved-lemon aioli and salsa verde. A heritage tomato and mozzarella salad, mushroom pâté with hazelnut and shiitake, buttermilk fried chicken and sharp beef tartare offer markedly different flavours and textures, making the smaller dishes useful for a curious table.
Large plates continue that breadth. A twelve-hour whole lamb shoulder with salsa verde is designed for at least two people, while tomato risotto and za'atar-spiced cauliflower give vegetables serious attention. Miso-glazed market fish pairs daikon and pickled shiitake with lemon butter, and the meat choices move through chicken schnitzel, prime sirloin and an aged-beef burger with cheddar and dill pickles. Sides range from Waldorf salad to potatoes with truffle crème fraîche.
Dessert can finish brightly with lemon-curd tart and blackberry, more richly with caramelised chocolate mousse or sticky date pudding, or more gently with wine-poached pear and coconut cream. Cheese and sweet wines provide another route into the adjoining lounge, where cocktails and occasional live music extend the night. Hummingbird's combination of considered food and two distinct rooms makes it adaptable to date nights, group dinners and celebrations without forcing every visit into the same pace.
