Yak & Fern is a New Brighton family restaurant built around the warmth and depth of Nepali comfort food. Its Brighton Mall location is close to the beach and He Puna Taimoana, making it an easy continuation of a day by the coast rather than a trip back into central Christchurch. Table bookings are available, but the food and hospitality remain deliberately casual, with dishes designed to feel generous and familiar.

Momo provide the clearest introduction to the kitchen. Diners can choose steamed or fried dumplings, then explore versions finished in tangy jhol, chilli sauce, honey chilli or a hot-and-sour soup. Chicken, beef, pork and vegetable fillings appear across the range, so a table can compare the same essential dumpling in brothy, crisp and sauced forms rather than committing to a single style.

The menu travels well beyond dumplings. Daal bhat tarkari offers the traditional combination of lentils, rice and accompaniments, while Himalayan thukpa supplies a warming noodle soup with vegetables and a choice of protein. Chowmein, keema noodles and slippery laphing cover very different noodle textures; smoky choila and overnight-marinated sekuwa bring mustard oil, spices and charcoal grilling into the meal.

Yak & Fern also works across more of the day than its signature dishes might suggest. Lunch deals and all-day breakfast sit beside boba, coffee, hot drinks, iced drinks and milkshakes, making the restaurant useful for a quick stop as well as a longer shared meal. That breadth does not dilute the Nepali centre of the menu; it gives groups more ways to gather around it, whether they arrive for dumplings, a bowl of thukpa or a full daal bhat.
