Pompeii Pizza has been part of Palmerston North since 1988, giving its place on The Square the feel of an established local dining room rather than a short-lived pizza counter. Guests can eat in, collect an order or arrange local delivery, and the restaurant's menu has grown broad enough to handle family dinners and group meals. Its longevity is matched by a straightforward kitchen principle: dough is made fresh each day and pizzas are assembled from raw ingredients for each order.
The names give the pizza list a playful Roman theme, but the combinations are carefully differentiated. Gladiator brings bacon, beef, salami and mushroom together, while Godfather adds olives and anchovies to salami and mushroom. Roman Empire loads beef, bacon, salami, vegetables, pineapple and gherkin onto one base; Hercules takes a more delicate direction with smoked salmon, brie, avocado, pesto and cracked pepper.
Pizza is only one route through the dine-in menu. Beef lasagne follows a classic pasta, mince and béchamel structure, while the vegetarian version layers roasted vegetables, spinach and tomato sauce. Barbecue chicken, marinated beef and Mediterranean salads offer lighter contrasts, and Tuscan chicken or beef schnitzel parmigiana provide full plated mains. Sundaes, cakes and a berry-and-chocolate dessert pizza make it easy to keep the meal going.
A separate vegan menu is more than a token substitution list: it uses vegan mozzarella across pizzas and adds vegan lasagne, Mediterranean salad, dessert pizza and dairy-free sundaes. A small gluten-free pizza base and selected gluten-free main-course adaptations are also available, though the kitchen is clear that cross-contamination remains possible. Half-and-half large pizzas, children's choices and several service formats make Pompeii particularly workable when a table has different tastes and dietary priorities.
