Dumpling House – Grey Street is the Hamilton East branch of a local Chinese restaurant, set up for a relaxed meal as well as takeaway and delivery. The dining room gives the menu more range than the name alone suggests: dumplings lead, but noodle soups, sizzling plates, rice dishes and traditional snacks all have room to become the centre of a meal. It is the branch to choose when the table wants to compare several formats rather than stop at one basket of dumplings.
The handmade dumpling section moves between crisp and soft textures. Pan-fried dumplings arrive in a large batch with a garlic-soy dipping sauce, while steamed pork-and-prawn dumplings can be served over vegetables or noodles in a spicy garlic sauce finished with spring onion, sesame and roasted peanuts. Pork-and-cabbage dumplings in hot-and-spicy soup provide a warming alternative in which the broth is as important as the wrapper and filling.
Street-food plates make useful additions for sharing. The Chinese burger and salt-and-pepper spring-onion pancake are compact options, while pan-fried pork buns bring a crisp base to a softer steamed dough. Spicy wontons and cold spicy chicken turn up the chilli, and the soup list ranges from wonton noodles to beef with pickled cabbage, pork-rib, lamb-rib and dan dan bowls. Together they let a table move between crisp snacks, warming broth and chilli heat.
Beyond dumplings and soup, the menu is organised for diners who prefer a complete rice or noodle plate. Braised pork belly, beef or lamb ribs can be paired with rice, alongside spicy tofu, seafood and egg-and-tomato choices. Sizzling noodles cover black-pepper beef, spicy chicken, seafood and a vegetable version, while miso ramen can be built around spiced pork, soy chicken or sweet fried tofu. That breadth makes the restaurant suitable for both a focused dumpling stop and a fuller shared dinner.
