Armadillo's Halswell is a neighbourhood pub-restaurant built around hearty meals, casual drinks and community entertainment. The Ensign Street venue trades daily and provides private group-booking space, making it useful for an ordinary family dinner as well as a celebration or social night. Its menu follows a recognisable New Zealand pub structure, but the range is broad enough to let a table choose among steak, slow-cooked meat, seafood, pasta, salads and burgers.
Red-meat dishes carry much of the traditional pub character. Ribeye, sirloin and rump steaks can be matched with garlic butter, mushroom, gravy or peppercorn sauce, then paired with vegetables or salad and potatoes or fries. The sirloin surf and turf adds garlic prawns, while slow-braised pork ribs rely on the group's own barbecue sauce. Lamb hotpot, capped with puff pastry and served with mash and gravy, offers a softer, slow-cooked alternative to the grill.
Chicken and seafood give the menu a second centre. Classic chicken schnitzel comes golden and crisp with mushroom sauce, salad and fries, while a chicken-and-bacon stack uses mash and a mild Cajun cream sauce. Pasta folds chicken, bacon and mushrooms through a white-wine cream. Gurnard appears both beer-battered with tartare and pan-fried beneath garlic prawns, and seafood chowder combines mixed seafood with a creamy white-wine reduction, toasted ciabatta and crisp kumara.
Burgers cover grilled and Southern-style crisp chicken, Angus beef, battered fish and a meat-free combination of portobello mushroom, halloumi and caramelised onion. Starters are equally varied: garlic bread and camembert sit beside sizzling chilli-lemon prawns, chicken tenders and golden cauliflower wings. That spread makes group ordering straightforward, with familiar choices for cautious diners and enough contrasting seafood, vegetarian and sauce-led dishes to prevent every plate from feeling like the same pub meal.
