Cellar Door looks across the historic South Quad of Christchurch's Arts Centre, placing its tables within a room that has held hospitality businesses for decades. The building began life in the nineteenth century as a school and later formed part of Canterbury College, giving lunch or dinner a sense of place that is unusual for a city wine bar. Indoor seating and a sheltered courtyard provide two ways to enjoy the setting, and daily service from noon until late lets the room shift naturally from daytime tastings to evening dining.
Wine is organised for discovery as much as for drinking by the glass or bottle. More than a dozen curated flights compare grapes, regions, winemaking methods and other themes, with each flight presenting four 40-millilitre pours at the table. The wider cellar draws from Canterbury, elsewhere in New Zealand and international producers, so a guest can stay local or use a tasting to travel further. Staff can pair that exploration with the food menu, turning several small pours into a guided part of the meal rather than a separate bar exercise.
The kitchen follows a classical European, wine-friendly approach built around fresh seasonal ingredients from close to home. Its all-day structure moves from snacks and small accompaniments to more substantial seasonal dishes, then into cheeses and desserts. That progression is deliberately flexible: one table might stop for a plate and a tasting flight, while another can use the same menu for a full lunch or dinner. The changing produce and wine list keep the pairings responsive instead of locking the restaurant into one fixed set of flavours.
Beyond wine, the drinks selection includes local craft beer, gin, whisky, aperitifs, digestifs and thoughtful low-and-no-alcohol choices. Bookings are shaped around the occasion, with longer sittings for dinner or a leisurely lunch and shorter options for flights, snacks or dessert. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, coeliac and dairy-free requirements can be accommodated, helping mixed groups share the same experience. With groups capped at eight, the atmosphere remains better suited to conversation and tasting than to a large function.
