Eight Plates occupies a heritage building near the top of Trafalgar Street, giving its sharing menu a setting with more character than a conventional dining room. The restaurant builds its food around seasonal produce and serves lunch as well as dinner on selected days. Guests can sit upstairs with a view towards the cathedral, use the terrace or sheltered deck, or choose a streetside table. That range of spaces supports anything from a casual plate and cocktail to a longer meal designed around several dishes for the table.
The centre of the menu is a sequence called The Eight, which changes with the seasons but keeps the restaurant's exploratory format intact. A current sample moves from raw fish tiradito with tiger's milk and chilli to house stracciatella with pickled pear and prosciutto. Crispy tofu, calamari with miso, market fish with romesco, fried chicken in kung pao sauce, New Zealand lamb rump and a veal cutlet complete the progression. The combination invites a table to contrast seafood, meat and vegetable cooking rather than commit everyone to one large main course.
Smaller additions make it easy to control the pace and size of the meal. Pacific oysters can be ordered natural with elderflower granita or fried in tempura batter with togarashi, while house focaccia and flatbread offer a straightforward opening. Potato rösti, popcorn mushrooms and seasonal vegetables are designed for the table and can fill gaps between richer plates. Dietary labels identify gluten free, dairy free and vegan dishes, and several items can be adapted when requirements are raised at booking or arrival.
Dessert continues the compact, composed style with a changing house cookie, dark chocolate bar, local cheeses, affogato and a vanilla dessert with muscat and cacao nib praline. Wines are selected to highlight New Zealand producers, while the cocktail list gives the bar its own reason to visit. Larger parties can use a private function room or choose set sharing menus, and smaller groups can reserve an upstairs room. Eight Plates therefore keeps the intimacy of sharing plates while still having the space and service structure for celebrations.
