TALA is chef Henry Onesemo's contemporary Samoan restaurant in Parnell, shaped around the idea that a meal can carry memory, culture and story. The word tala means a story or tale, and the restaurant uses that meaning with purpose: traditional Samoan flavours and heritage are not decorative references but the basis of the experience. An intimate dining room and close view of the kitchen keep the evening personal, matching the detail of the tasting menus.
Guests choose between two structured experiences, the Chef's Journey and the Fāgogo Journey. Their course names move through seasonal fruit, Palolo, Pisupo, Panikeke, Sua l'a, Oka, Roadside BBQ and Umu Chicken before desserts built around Copra, Siamu Popo, Pani Popo, pavlova and Koko Samoa. Read together, those names show a menu with its own vocabulary, one that asks diners to follow a sequence rather than simply select familiar starters and mains.
The cooking is grounded in recognisable Samoan preparations while allowing them to change shape at the table. A version of palusami, oka made with coconut yoghurt and lamb sapasui all connect the tasting format to food with family and cultural resonance. Chicken wrapped in banana leaves with herbs and citrus is cooked on hot stones in the umu, then unwrapped and portioned across the meal. From the kitchen counter, that preparation becomes part of the story rather than something hidden backstage.
Warm hospitality ties the courses together. Counter seats make the craft visible, while the compact room keeps each explanation and handover close to the guest. Dinner runs from Wednesday to Saturday, with Friday and Saturday lunch offering another way to experience the menu. The entrance is reached by following the walkway to the rear of 235 Parnell Road, a discreet arrival that suits a restaurant whose impact comes through sustained attention rather than spectacle.
