D4 on Featherston brings the idea of a Dublin local to an upstairs room in Wellington's central business district. Irish owner-operator Dermot Murphy has led the independently owned venue since 2007, shaping it as a place for meals, after-work gatherings and live sport rather than a drinks-only bar. Its position above street level gives the pub a tucked-away character, while reservations, table service and function menus support everything from a quick lunch to a group occasion.
Irish roots are clearest in plates such as curry fries and steak-and-Guinness pie, both designed for the comfort-food end of the menu. Burgers, pizzas and classic pub starters broaden the choice, and a frequently changing burger special gives regular lunch diners something new to consider. This is a substantial restaurant offering as well as bar food: guests can stop for a light bite, settle in for dinner, or choose shareable dishes around a table.
Much of the kitchen work happens in house, including pizza dough and sauces, so the familiar pub format carries a degree of craft. Seasonal changes allow lighter salads to give way to richer winter dishes, while the house-made vegan burger and coconut chocolate mousse provide considered choices beyond meat-led standards. Staff can also discuss adjustments such as sauce changes or a gluten-free bun, making the menu easier to navigate for mixed groups with different appetites.
The drinks programme is unusually broad, with 26 taps and a strong emphasis on New Zealand craft beer alongside Irish staples. Wine, cocktails and low- or no-alcohol options make the bar useful for more than one kind of gathering. Five sport screens provide the focal point on match days, but the dedicated table sections and attentive service also let diners treat D4 as a relaxed city restaurant when no major game is on.
