Forbidden City Restaurant is a central Lower Hutt Chinese dining room with the easy rhythm of a neighbourhood BYO. Its Unit 1 position on Queens Drive is open for dinner throughout the week, with lunch service added on most weekdays and Saturday. Diners can settle in for table service, while the restaurant's active pickup menu makes the same cooking accessible at home. The combination suits anything from a quick plate of noodles at midday to a larger evening meal built around dishes passed across the table.
Dumplings and crisp snacks provide a natural way to begin. Wontons and spring rolls sit alongside steamed or pan-fried dumplings, dim sims and crispy king prawns, allowing a table to mix textures before the main dishes arrive. The rice and noodle section is equally flexible: vegetable, chicken, beef, shrimp and combination fried rice are joined by mee goreng, fried noodles and broad ho fan. These are useful anchors for a meal, but each is substantial enough to stand alone when the occasion calls for something uncomplicated.
The meat dishes travel through several familiar Chinese sauce styles without collapsing into one note. Sweet-and-sour, lemon, cashew and Gongbao chicken contrast with orange beef, black-bean beef and shredded beef with coriander. Lamb receives its own range, including cumin, Szechuan, black-pepper and spring-onion preparations. Because the sauces and seasonings differ so clearly, a shared order can move from citrus and sweetness to pepper, chilli and deep savoury flavours. Steamed rice or a vegetable plate then provides a calm counterpoint to the stronger dishes.
Meat-free diners are not confined to a single fallback. Braised eggplant, greens in garlic sauce, chilli beans and tofu with vegetables sit beside braised tofu and Chinese homestyle tofu, while seafood choices cover squid, prawns and sweet-and-sour fish. Hot-and-sour, chicken-corn and wonton soups offer a lighter course, and the family combinations bundle appetisers, rice or noodles and several mains for groups. Forbidden City works best as a sharing restaurant, where choosing across sections reveals far more of the kitchen than any one dish can show.
