Slices of green pea and bacon quiche at Le Marché Français

Le Marché Français has brought a distinctly French food experience to Wellington’s Woolstore building since 2008. The business combines a licensed bistro with a specialist deli on the first floor, creating a place where a cafe meal can lead naturally into cheese and pantry shopping. Bistro owner Veronique Sauzeau, formerly a chef at the French Embassy in Wellington, keeps the dining side relaxed and grounded in local and organic produce where practical.

Breakfast and brunch stay close to recognisable French cafe traditions. A croque-monsieur layers Parisian ham with béchamel and cheese, with a fried egg turning it into a croque-madame. There are Gruyère omelettes, ham and cheese croissants, French toast with banana and maple syrup, and poached eggs paired with smoked salmon or prosciutto. Even a simple toasted baguette comes with butter, honey or house-made jam.

Lunch widens the choice through quiches, tarts, salads and platters. Quiche Lorraine shares the counter with smoked salmon and spinach or goat cheese, fig and walnut versions; savoury tarts use tomato and olive or leek and Roquefort. The salads range from warm goat cheese and honey to Niçoise, while platters combine French cheeses, pâté, prosciutto, walnuts and caramelised onion jam for diners who prefer to graze.

The adjoining deli gives the venue much of its personality. More than fifty cheeses are imported directly from France, spanning farmhouse, raw-milk and pasteurised styles, alongside terrines, rillettes, mustards, preserves and confectionery. Pear and almond tart, lemon meringue tart and crème brûlée provide a natural bistro finish, and the team also handles private functions, weddings and cocktail gatherings when the space is booked beyond its regular daytime rhythm.
