Peckish Jr. Cafe is not confined to the usual coffee-and-toast formula. From its Willis Street base in Te Aro, the kitchen combines daytime cafe service with Vietnamese favourites and a wider selection of Asian-influenced comfort food. A diner can move from banh mi or pho to chicken katsu, pad Thai, a rice bowl or a burger without leaving the same compact menu. Pickup and delivery reinforce that casual flexibility, while the daytime schedule keeps the focus on breakfast, lunch and smaller snacks.
The Vietnamese side is most visible in the bread and soup choices. Banh mi comes with crispy pork, lemongrass chicken or crispy tofu, each bringing a different texture to the pickles, herbs and house sauce. Beef pho uses an eight-hour bone broth with sliced beef, beef balls, flat noodles and fresh herbs, while chicken pho and a spicy beef noodle soup offer lighter and hotter variations. Iced Vietnamese coffee provides a natural companion when a sandwich is chosen instead of a bowl.
Larger plates range well beyond soup. Buttermilk-marinated chicken katsu can be taken with rice or chips, fried rice and pad Thai allow a choice of protein, and the silky tofu bowl layers crisp tofu and tempura eggplant with edamame, avocado, pickles and cabbage. Burgers bring another direction through slow-cooked bulgogi beef or sweet-spiced crunchy chicken. A lime-and-lemongrass noodle salad keeps the herbs, pickles and peanuts prominent when something fresh is more appealing than fried food.
Smaller appetites receive just as much attention. Crispy chicken bao, shaking tofu in lemongrass chilli sauce and bulgogi toast with kimchi can become a snack or a mixed share order, while pastries cover the sweeter cafe end of the counter. Matcha appears in several cold drinks, alongside the house coffee blend and more playful iced combinations. The result is a cafe that can handle a quick pastry and drink, a portable banh mi or a complete bowl of noodles with equal confidence.
