Salty Pidgin is a Brooklyn neighbourhood bistro with the ambition of a city restaurant and the ease of a local. Owners JP Henderson and Amy Gillies opened it in 2015 inside a heritage building on Todman Street, retaining the character of the old shop spaces while shaping an intimate, multi-level dining room. Seasonal New Zealand produce drives the kitchen, and a fireplace, bar seating and proximity to the Penthouse Cinema make the restaurant feel equally natural for a full dinner or a pre-film drink and plate.
The smaller dishes make the current menu easy to approach in stages. Crispy cauliflower with harissa mayonnaise remains a direct, spicy snack, while duck-liver parfait arrives with grilled sourdough. Feta-and-olive pork sausage, prawn börek with garlic yoghurt and green-lipped mussels offer richer options; crumbed fish goujons use tamarind, coriander and cabbage for lift. House-made pasta with pea pesto and ham-hock gnocchi add a comforting bridge between the snack list and the larger plates.
Main courses are concise but varied: eye fillet comes with smoked-beef-fat potatoes and caramelised onion, market fish with Brussels sprouts, lemon and crisp kataifi, and roasted celeriac with lentils and hazelnut. The pide section keeps the restaurant's more casual side visible. Its folded Turkish-style breads carry fillings such as beef kofta, lamb shoulder with sumac and garlic yoghurt, spiced chicken with harissa, or a vegetarian mix of cheese, pumpkin, pickled chilli and sunflower seeds.
Dessert continues the kitchen's preference for familiar forms with unexpected accents. Lemon-meringue semifreddo is paired with shortbread, Guinness chocolate cake with coffee sour cream and stout-soaked raisins, and cinnamon crème caramel with date and honeyed oat. A deep wine selection is central to the bar, joined by bottled beer and cocktails that also suit shorter visits. That combination of serious cooking, approachable pide and a confidently stocked bar explains why Salty Pidgin works as both a destination meal and Brooklyn's regular gathering place.
