Two Fat Indians sits in central Christchurch beside Riverside Market, combining a convenient city position with an Indian kitchen that has worked under the same name since 2000. Its identity rests on two clear promises: naan cooked in the clay oven and curries made from scratch. The restaurant is open seven days for sit-down meals, while reservations, takeaway and delivery widen the ways to use it. Inside, the emphasis remains on a full restaurant experience, with cocktails, a dedicated high-tea offering and a menu broad enough to support either a quick shared lunch or a long evening meal.
Small plates move confidently between street-food ideas and tandoor cooking. Samosa chaat layers crisp pastry with potato, yoghurt and chutneys, while tokri chaat uses delicate potato baskets and gol gappe deliver a sharper sweet-and-savoury burst. Paneer tikka, beetroot-paneer kulcha and onion bhajees give vegetarians several starting points. Chicken tikka Punjabi, overnight-marinated Rajasthani wings and lamb galouti kebab deepen the grilled and spiced selection. A mixed chaat plate or the tandoor-led Two Fats' platter can turn those individual tastes into an easy shared opening for the whole table.
The curry list is more regional than its familiar butter chicken might initially suggest. Chicken yakkhan brings mint, nuts and Mughlai spice; Mummyji's chicken is slow-cooked in a richly seasoned sauce; lamb shank nihari and railway-style lamb follow different traditions again. Bengali fish is finished with mustard oil and regional spices, while prawn jhalfrezi combines tomato, capsicum, roasted spice and citrus. Aloo gobi, dal makhani, kadhai paneer, jackfruit masala and spinach-paneer kofta give vegetarian diners equally specific choices. Mains arrive with rice, leaving diners to choose breads that suit the sauce and their appetite.
Biryani and bread deserve room of their own. Lamb biryani is sealed with naan dough to hold in fragrance, chicken cooks slowly with basmati rice, herbs and yoghurt, and jackfruit provides a vegan variation with Mughlai spices. Garlic naan, wholemeal tandoori roti, layered lachha paratha and breads filled with potato, chicken or cheese let diners match texture to sauce and appetite. In the afternoon, a book-ahead Indian high tea changes the format entirely, presenting savoury and sweet tiers to share with chai or a drink from the bar. It is a playful extension of a kitchen otherwise grounded in tandoor heat and slow-cooked spice.
