Welcome Vegetarian Cafe is a Riccarton eatery and takeaway built around home-style vegetarian Asian cooking. The opening dishes show how broad a vegetarian menu can be. Dumplings, steamed buns, spring rolls, wontons and samosas cover steamed and crisp textures, while kebabs, sticky rice and crispy tofu move beyond familiar snack plates. Those choices can become a shared first course or a meal assembled from smaller portions. The kitchen's Asian focus is deliberately wide rather than tied to one regional label, so the combinations travel from dim-sum-style bites to spiced fried snacks without needing meat to anchor the flavours.

Noodles and soup are the most extensive routes through the menu. Diners can choose ramen, Singapore noodles, vermicelli, flat rice noodles or crisp noodles, served fried or in one of several broths. Fresh vegetable, herbal and tom yum soups give the bowls distinct profiles, while a winter steamboat turns soup into a communal centrepiece. Rice dishes, coconut curry, vegetarian steak and soy-based roasts offer more substantial alternatives. Sizzling plates and clay pots, including ginger rice and eggplant-tofu combinations, add heat and aroma at the table.

The selection continues through chef specials and an unusually varied dessert-and-drinks list. Sweet red-bean and black-glutinous-rice soups provide traditional finishes, while fried banana, fruit salad, a banana split and vegan ice cream offer more familiar choices. Soy milk, juices and teas suit diners avoiding dairy or alcohol. Because the kitchen gives equal attention to snacks, noodle bowls, rice, hot plates and sweets, a mixed group can order very differently while staying within a fully vegetarian menu. That depth, rather than a single imitation-meat speciality, is the cafe's defining strength.
