Mona Vale Kitchen & Events occupies a rare kind of Christchurch dining room: a restored Victorian homestead set among public gardens beside the Avon River. Architect Joseph Clarkson Maddison designed the house in 1899 and 1900, and later owner Annie Quayle Townend gave Mona Vale its name and expanded the grounds. The homestead became a restaurant and function venue in 1978, then returned to dining in 2016 after an extensive post-earthquake rebuild. That history gives lunch or high tea a genuine sense of place without making the experience overly formal.
The spring brunch menu moves easily between a substantial breakfast and lighter, more detailed plates. The Mona Vale breakfast brings together Agria rosti, eggs, bacon, mushrooms, spinach, tomato and Italian sausage, while wild mushroom toast adds chorizo, truffle butter, poached eggs and pecorino. Avocado toast is sharpened with gremolata and dukkah, eggs Benedict sits on potato rosti with greens and hollandaise, and Baileys French toast leans into strawberries, pistachio and a salted Biscoff crumb.
Later in the day, the kitchen balances familiar comforts with seasonal accents. Tempura cauliflower comes with a soy and maple glaze, and buttermilk fried chicken is paired with Appleton barbecue sauce and garlic mayonnaise. A cheeseburger and smoked brisket pita provide heartier options, while butternut and sage gnocchi, market fish with saffron and onion soubise, seasonal soup and a halloumi salad give the menu different weights and flavours. Hand cut chips carry horopito seasoning, and the cabinet holds the day's sweet finish.
High tea remains central to the Mona Vale experience. The signature service combines delicate savouries and sweets with barista coffee or bottomless tea, while a simpler Devonshire tea pairs a buttermilk scone with the house ham and egg finger sandwich. Individual treats can include scampi toast, vegetable quiche, venison and fennel sausage roll, choux bun, macarons and dark chocolate madeleine. Local wine, craft beer, cocktails and non-alcoholic choices make it just as easy to turn a garden walk into a long lunch or a small celebration.
