Broadway Diner carries a Newmarket food-cart tradition into the early hours of the morning. Its lineage begins with the Newmarket Piecart in 1948, before Guy McLeod and Cherry Washer reshaped the business from 1962 around American-style burgers and shakes. Their daughter Fiona took over in 2014, preserving the family connection at the same Broadway site. Opening late every night of the year is central to its identity: this is food designed for after-hours Auckland as much as for an ordinary evening meal.
The classic burgers keep the construction straightforward and ingredient-led. Hand-rolled New Zealand Angus beef is served with fresh lettuce, tomato and onions fried in butter, then varied with cheese, egg, bacon, pineapple, beetroot or relish. The Old School combination uses egg, beetroot and relish, while the Deluxe layers egg, cheese, bacon and pineapple. Broadway's BBQ Smash Royale departs from the single-patty formula with two smashed patties, bacon, cheese, pickles and barbecue sauce, bringing a heavier modern option into the traditional range.
Several branches of the menu move beyond the standard beef patty. Crumbed chicken breast can be matched with aioli, peri-peri mayonnaise or bacon and cheese, and the fish burger uses crumbed New Zealand dory. Scotch-fillet steak appears in a regular steak burger, the large Aucklander and the fully loaded White Lady. Vegetarian patties combine kumara, sweet corn, chickpea, lemongrass, ginger and coriander, with other meat-free burgers built around egg, cheese, pineapple and hash brown. The variety feels additive without losing the diner's old-fashioned frame.
Late-night appetites can also bypass burgers entirely. Steak, eggs and chips and a mixed grill provide full plate meals, while New York, chilli and bacon-topped hot dogs lean into the American inspiration. BLT and steak-and-onion toasties offer a simpler choice between buttered bread. Chunky Agria chips, kumara chips and the Kiwi hot dog on a stick keep local takeaway traditions present. Thick milkshakes made with New Zealand ice cream finish the picture, with flavours ranging from chocolate and banana to lime, caramel and creaming soda.
