Shared seasonal dish at 5th Street in Sydenham

5th Street turns a former Sydenham warehouse into a warm, eclectic place for dinner, with recycled materials contributing to the room's distinctive character. The kitchen organises its food as small, medium and large plates designed to be shared, so a table can build a meal gradually instead of committing everyone to separate courses. That format suits both a quick selection of dishes and a longer evening, and the restaurant opens from late afternoon every day. Attentive hospitality is part of the concept, making the service as important to the experience as the sequence of plates.

The small plates introduce the kitchen's lively contrasts. Tofu gribiche is paired with hashbrown, caramelised lemon and buckwheat, while stracciatella meets jalapeño agrodolce and sourdough. Char siu pork comes with rice crisp, pickled cucumber and sesame, and karaage chicken combines coriander mayonnaise with caramel. Salmon tartare brings bitters crema, fennel, almond and potato into the mix, while a spinach palusami croquette with coconut and burnt lime gives the meat-free choices a distinctive direction of their own.

Vegetables have a substantial role in the middle of the menu. Brassica salad uses mint, chilli peanut, shallot and lemon vinaigrette, triple-cooked Agria potatoes come with tomato reduction and balsamic, and broccolini is finished with smoked cheddar custard and pink pepper. Larger plates broaden the choice through kumara gnocchi with kale and miso butter, pan-fried market fish with tarragon and chardonnay butter, sirloin with mushroom duxelle, lamb shoulder with butternut pumpkin yoghurt, and ribeye with a spiced reduction and paprika butter.

Because the menu is scaled by plate size, the restaurant leaves plenty of room for diners to shape the occasion themselves. Two people can focus on a few smaller dishes, while a larger table can range across vegetables, seafood and grilled meats. The two-course Trust the 5th option hands the selection to the kitchen and is explicitly designed for the whole table to share. Vegetarian and vegan markers, along with notes about possible dairy-free and gluten-free adaptations, make the current menu easier to navigate for mixed groups.
