Capizzi Pizzeria is a small, fully licensed Rotorua restaurant built around a traditional wood-fired oven. Its Tutanekai Street room seats up to 30 people, with a choice between the cosy interior and a sunny courtyard, so the atmosphere stays intimate even when the tables are busy. Service runs seven days and extends beyond dine-in bookings to pickup and delivery. That flexibility makes Capizzi equally practical for a family meal in the restaurant, a relaxed table with wine, or pizza taken home for a larger group.
The oven defines both the process and the flavour. Dough is stretched by hand, spread with house-made tomato sauce and topped with ingredients sourced from local suppliers as well as Italian producers. Each pizza then cooks at 350 to 400 degrees over mānuka wood, giving the base a crisp edge and a lightly smoky finish. Starters stay close to that heat through garlic bread, pesto focaccia and bruschetta made with wood-roasted bread, while Italian, Caesar, antipasto, rocket and Caprese salads bring a cooler counterpoint.
Pizza choices move from concise classics to densely layered combinations. Margherita keeps to tomato, mozzarella, basil and sliced tomato, while Bufalina adds buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil. Meatier options bring together pepperoni, Italian sausage, meatballs, ham, bacon or prosciutto; Siciliana uses anchovies, capers and olives, and the house Capizzi combination adds mushrooms, capsicum and red onion. Four-cheese, artichoke-and-feta Mediterranean, roasted-vegetable and eggplant pizzas give vegetarian diners enough variety to choose by flavour rather than simply by omission.
Dietary and family choices are built into the same pizza format. Gluten-free bases can be paired with familiar toppings, while vegan combinations use roasted peppers, mushrooms, spinach, eggplant, red onion and dairy-free cheese; staff describe taking extra care to reduce cross-contact during preparation. Children have smaller Margherita, cheese, pepperoni, ham-and-pineapple or chicken-and-mushroom pizzas. Gelato and warm chocolate brownie with gelato provide a simple finish, and local or Italian wine and beer can turn the compact pizzeria into a complete evening rather than a quick takeaway stop.
