Harbourside occupies Tauranga's old yacht club building at the southern end of The Strand, beside the former railway bridge and directly over the water. The harbour view gives the dining room a naturally special setting, but the restaurant describes its hospitality as warm and unpretentious rather than ceremonious. Owners Peter and Anita Ward welcome guests, with their son Cameron leading the kitchen, so the fine-dining approach still carries the personality of a family-run venue.
The first courses show how widely the kitchen interprets coastal dining. Oysters arrive with green-apple mignonette, tuna crudo is sharpened with ponzu and truffle dressing, and the seafood chowder gathers salmon, white fish, mussels, prawns and calamari. Grilled tiger prawns sit in puttanesca sauce, while Szechuan-peppered squid brings orange caramel and pickled ginger. Venison tartare, lamb kofta and a chipotle kūmara-and-black-bean croquette keep the opening selection from becoming seafood only.
Main plates balance precise accompaniments with recognisable ingredients. Market fish is paired with prawn and preserved-lemon risotto, and eye fillet comes with pecorino potatoes, truffle cream and seasonal greens. Venison joins cabbage, cherries and roasted yams; chicken is served with gnocchi and a creamy herb sauce; and lamb rump adds polenta, peperonata and whipped feta. A pumpkin and chickpea Madras curry, complete with eggplant, mint chutney and basmati rice, provides a fully considered vegetarian direction.
Dessert carries the same composed style into the final course. Chocolate and salted-caramel tart, baked banoffee cheesecake, raspberry and white-chocolate brûlée, sticky date pudding and a Frangelico affogato offer several levels of richness. Cheese from a Putāruru producer is another option for a slower finish. Lunch, dinner and a Sunday long lunch make the waterfront room usable in different ways, while the kitchen's preference for fresh, local and organic ingredients helps connect the detailed plates to the Bay of Plenty setting.
