Hawker House brings the colour and energy of South-East Asian street food to Nelson's upper Trafalgar Street dining precinct. Owners Matt and Tania Bouterey have shaped the restaurant around generous flavour and a social way of eating, while Chef Felipe Molina interprets classic ideas with his own combinations. Plates are intended to be shared and leave the kitchen when ready, encouraging the table to build a meal gradually rather than waiting for formal, simultaneous courses.
The restaurant's farm connection gives that broad regional inspiration a local foundation. Matt picks vegetables from the owners' farm, and the kitchen works as much home-grown produce as it can into the menu. Soy-glazed eggplant comes with miso and burnt-cauliflower puree, bok choy is wok-tossed with black-bean shiitake XO and pepitas, and the simply named Hawker vege follows what has been freshly harvested. These dishes make vegetables a central part of the feast rather than background garnish.
Seafood plates move between Japanese, Singaporean and Vietnamese accents without losing the kitchen's playful character. Crispy sushi rice supports the naughty nigiri, Singapore sashimi is paired with crispy onion and a mango-lemongrass sauce, and karaage chilli squid arrives with hot-and-sour flavours. Jungle prawns use nuoc cham and kaffir lime. On the meat side, Chicken 65, Massaman-spiced lamb shoulder, hoisin pork ribs and flank steak with peanut chilli crisp bring smoke, spice and deep savoury notes.
Dessert keeps the same interest in crossing familiar ingredients with Asian flavours: dark-chocolate delice carries miso and bitter honeycomb, while lemongrass panna cotta comes with brûléed apple and shortbread. The bar backs the food with regional New Zealand wine, changing craft beer taps, sake and cocktails that draw on seasonal fruit. Together they make Hawker House equally suited to a quick set of small plates or a longer evening built around the full progression of food and drinks.
