Shady Lady is built for the late-night energy of Courtenay Place. It opens in the evening and runs into the early hours, combining a front bar, booths, a courtyard and a small retro caravan space with a programme that becomes livelier as the night progresses. This is a party bar first, but the current food menu gives visitors a genuine meal option before the DJs and dancing take over. The result suits groups who want to stay in one place from an early bite through to a much later finish.
The smaller plates are designed for an informal table. Salt and pepper calamari comes with aioli and lemon, while rice-flour-coated cauliflower is finished with sweet chilli sauce. Onion rings, polenta fritto, falafel bites and jalapeño poppers create a mix of crisp vegetarian snacks, and chicken nuggets provide a straightforward alternative. Regular fries can be kept simple with sauces or turned into a heavier serving with mozzarella and gravy, so several plates can be ordered together and passed around rather than treated as separate courses.
Pizza gives the compact food selection its most substantial element. The thick-crust Margherita is topped with mozzarella and basil pesto, while a pepperoni version keeps the combination direct. The Mexican pizza adds sliced chorizo, jalapeño and a barbecue swirl for a smokier, hotter profile. Function bookings can use the full food menu or a separate platter menu, and the different spaces accommodate everything from a booth-sized gathering to a courtyard celebration, making the food part of the event rather than an afterthought.
Drinks and entertainment remain the centre of the Shady Lady experience. Cocktails appear throughout the weekly programme, from Monday offers and shared teapot serves to a hands-on cocktail masterclass for groups. Quiz nights, student events and late DJ sets move the room from games and conversation into dancing. The venue also publishes a detailed safe-space policy and uses ID scanning at entry, an important practical element for a bar that trades so late and positions itself as a busy part of Wellington's nightlife.
