Martha’s Pantry is a Cuba Street cafe devoted to the ritual of high tea. It has served Wellington since 2007, and its setting supports that sense of continuity: handmade food arrives on tiered stands with vintage crockery and cutlery, while the brick-clad room offers a nostalgic backdrop. A rear courtyard adds an outdoor option on fine days, giving celebrations and quiet catch-ups a choice of atmosphere.
The standard high tea is arranged as a complete sequence rather than a loose cake selection. Four savouries establish the meal before a vanilla scone and four sweets move it toward the traditional afternoon finish. Exact pieces change with seasonal availability, so the pleasure lies partly in seeing how the kitchen fills the familiar structure on the day. Presentation on a proper stand keeps the sweet and savoury components visible and encourages an unhurried pace.
Tea receives the same attention as the food. The selection includes 25 T Leaf teas, enough to move beyond a single breakfast blend and choose something suited to delicate sweets, richer baking or savoury bites. Barista-made People’s Coffee offers a genuine alternative for guests who would rather anchor the occasion with espresso. That dual focus prevents the drinks from feeling like an afterthought to an otherwise carefully staged service.
Several dedicated formats make the experience workable for different parties. Vegetarian and gluten-free high teas have their own compositions, while children can receive a smaller mix of savouries, sweets, a scone and a drink. The vegan service is particularly explicit, bringing together club sandwiches, cupcake, pistachio amaretti, fruit salad, chocolate slice and a plain scone. These are planned alternatives, not simply pieces removed from the standard stand.
